Frenchman Robert Marchand has set the first hourly world record for over 100-year-olds. He rode exactly 24.251 kilometres in one hour on the UCI velodrome in Aigle.

This is the first time that a cycling hour world record has been awarded in the Masters 100 plus class. "I just wanted to do something to celebrate my 100th birthday," said Robert Marchand, explaining his motive. "I haven't cycled on the track for 80 years". On the advice of his doctor, he always kept his pulse below 110 beats during his record ride. "I don't smoke and have never drunk much alcohol," says Marchand, explaining his good physical condition.

Rober Marchand rode his first bike race at the age of 14. At the age of 90, he completed the 600 kilometres from Bordeaux to Paris. He is known in the French road cycling scene for his many years of participation in the L'Ardéchoise (you can find a report on the L'Ardéchoise in TOUR 3/2012).
