The Japanese anime film "NASU - A Summer in Andalusia" shows cycling in an unusual visual style with its very own aesthetic.
NASU is the first ever anime about cycling. Until now, this animated film genre from Japan has tended to be limited to classic genres such as literary adaptations, science fiction, romance films and horror.
NASU was the first animated film to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival. It tells the story of a stage of the Spanish Vuelta, in which the participants have to sweat under the blazing Andalusian sun. The jerseys of the professional cyclists are clearly assigned to the colours and lettering of (now mostly former) professional teams.
Even if the overlap between the fan communities of anime and cycling is probably rather small: It might be worth taking a look outside the box. The cycling anime is available with an elaborately designed booklet, soundtrack and bonus material DVD from "Nipponart", a German DVD publisher for Japanese animated films, at a price of 27.95 euros plus postage.
