Although it was a premiere, the rush for starting places was huge: all starting numbers had already been allocated months in advance. However, the confidence is now likely to have waned somewhat. The Pedal Performance Group is postponing the premiere of the Carinthia200 road cycling event from 31 May to 20 September 2026. According to a press release, the decision was made in consultation with the Villach Tourism Region, the relevant authorities and emergency services.
Road repairs on one section of the route after the winter are preventing the race from being held in May. The organiser has already initiated the approval process for the route on the new date. The event was fully booked with 2,000 starting places just a few weeks after it was announced. Julius Rupitsch understands that the postponement two months before the planned date is disappointing for many. The organiser is working on an additional community event on the original event weekend at the end of May.
Patrick Schörkmayer, who is the race director of the Carinthia200 and also has many years of experience as race director of the Ironman Carinthia in Klagenfurt, is responsible for the sporting concept of the event. "The course concept combines a sporting challenge, safety and scenic highlights," explains Schörkmayer. The three distances on offer of 200, 155 and 125 kilometres are designed to appeal to the entire spectrum of racing cyclists. The routes lead through the Villach region and include the areas around Lake Faak and Lake Ossiach. According to current plans, the long distance will have an elevation gain of around 3285 metres. The medium distance will have around 2630 metres of elevation gain and the short distance will still have 1575 metres of elevation gain. The promised road closures should be emphasised: according to the announcement, the roads will be completely closed to traffic during the race. In some sections of the route, the closures will only apply to one carriageway - cyclists and public traffic will each use separate carriageways, secured by traffic cones.
Georg Overs, Managing Director of Region Villach Tourismus GmbH, sees Carinthia200 as a strategic building block for positioning the region as a road bike destination. The event leads through the landscapes of the Villach-Faaker See-Ossiacher See region. The event should establish itself as a recurring signature event and generate added value for tourism. The postponement gives everyone involved time to optimise the framework conditions.
