Sailors also call the area between Flensburg and the Danish island of Funen the "Danish South Sea". Our tour, which we present here, covers around 500 kilometres and eight islands in five stages. From Flensburg via Als, we take the ferry to the island of Ærø and from the picturesque little town of Ærøskøbing we take the ferry across the Little Belt into Svendborgsund to the town on Funen that gives the route its name. Continue westwards via the islands of Tåsinge and Langeland. After another ferry ride, the route leads through the flat farmland of Lolland. After a few kilometres on Falster, the route turns westwards on Zealand to the Great Belt; across it by train to Funen, where you cycle in the footsteps of the "Fyen-Rundt", one of the oldest one-day races in the world. From the south-western tip of Funen, the ferry chugs across to Als, from where you return to the Flensburg Fjord.
There are no mountains in Denmark, but the route is rarely completely flat and the constant ups and downs are hard on the legs. Apart from a few unavoidable sections, our route is mainly along small, low-traffic roads or signposted and mostly well-maintained cycle paths.
