To say it straight away: If there's one thing I've never been in my life, it's a touring cyclist. I've always been a thoroughbred cyclist, competing in national and international races. The fact that I, of all people, am embarking on a cycle tour from one end of the UK to the other can be explained by two things: a nasty crash with a broken pelvis that I had at the Tour of Chong Min Island in China in 2009 and which cost me my cycling career. And British tradition. We Brits cherish our traditions.
One of them is called "End to End" and describes the shortest route between Land's End, the south-westernmost point of our main island, and John O'Groats, the north-easternmost point. There are 838 miles of road in between - 1,349 kilometres. When my cycling buddy Andy Smallman suggested I cycle this legendary route with him, I was immediately enthusiastic. And I was even more enthusiastic when he came up with the idea of choosing a route that was 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometres) long.
