Training camp or cultural trip: What happens when racing cyclists hop from island to island by boat? TOUR was there for the week-long premiere through the Kvarner Bay.

Tour guide Sascha has to pull out. Then paediatrician Renate also drops out. The remaining group of six flies towards their destination, the harbour of Tovarnele on the northern tip of the island of Pag. It is the fifth day of a seven-day boat trip in the Adriatic. On board: twelve racing cyclists who are cycling around five Croatian islands in the Kvarner Bay this week. And that's not all: a few sightseeing tours are also on the agenda. Unusual enough for a road bike tour. Pag is as thin as a needle in the Adriatic. The little road, lined with shrubs and olive trees, runs dead straight over the undulating, pale limestone rocky ridge. The Adriatic Sea to the left and right. But no-one is in the mood for views: the first rider leans low over the handlebars against the wind, while the others fixate on the rear wheel of the rider in front. Only a few more kilometres to the ship. The chain stays on the right, even on the short climbs. Karin, a computer scientist from Zurich, snorts loudly every time. She is tough, a fighter, but shortly before Lun she too has to let go...

The Kvarner Bay is located on the north-eastern Adriatic Sea in Croatia and is formed in the north by the Istrian peninsula and the Croatian mainland. The most important city in the region is Rijeka. Boat travellers visit five islands in the Kvarner Bay: Krk, Cres, Lošinj, Rab and Pag. In addition, there are the islands of Molat, Dugi Otok, Murter, Pašman and Ugljan to the south, all of which belong to the Dalmatia region, along the coast of which several kilometres of the road bike tour also run.
