An LED rear light on a road bike is always a good idea. Even and especially in autumn and winter, it means extra safety. We fitted eight models, recorded the charging and lighting times and immersed the respective road bike rear light under water.

Road bike rear light: BBB Spark 2.0

  • Light modes: bright, dimmed, 2 flashing cycles
  • Capacity indicator: blue LED
  • Charging / flash duration: 1:25 / 3:30 plus 3:30 hours reserve flashing

Conclusion: not road legal, easy to fit, long reserve

Road bike rear light: Busch & Müller Ixxi

  • Light modes: Continuous light
  • Capacity indicator: green LED
  • Charging / lighting time: 5:00 / 26:20 hrs.

Conclusion: long charging time, extremely long light duration, switch can be felt and switched very well, water can penetrate via large sealing surfaces

Road bike rear light: Cateye Rapid Micro G

  • Capacity indicator: red LED
  • Charging / lighting time: 1:45 / 5:00 hrs.

Conclusion: can be mounted horizontally and vertically, switch with relatively hard pressure point

Cube Acid

Conclusion: Road bike rear light with simple mounting, rubber too short for aero supports, switch difficult to feel

Conclusion: poor ratio of charging time to lighting time, Velcro strap too short for aero supports
