​If you want to use your smartphone as a sat-nav and fitness tracker mounted on your handlebars, you’ll need a reliable mount. We tested six models priced between 25 and 90 euros. The Quad Lock kit came out on top in our tests, but – comprising both the mount and a compatible smartphone case – it is also the most expensive option in the comparison.

​If you want to do more than just mount your smartphone on your handlebars – you also want to protect it from damage – you’ll find what you’re looking for at Quad Lock a different approach to that of traditional universal holders. The system consists of a holder and a specially designed smartphone case, which together form a single, secure unit. Similar concepts are also pursued by suppliers such as SP Connect, who likewise rely on model-specific protective cases.

The holder, designed as an arm, positions the smartphone in front of the handlebar stem and thus well within the rider’s field of vision. The case and mount are connected via a bayonet lock, which secures the device firmly in place. Depending on the intended use or personal preference, the smartphone can be mounted in either portrait or landscape orientation. The twisting motion required to lock it in place takes a bit of effort, but in return gives the impression of being very sturdy.

The cases are available for numerous current smartphone models and feature precisely cut-out openings and customised button covers, ensuring that the device can be used without restriction in everyday life. At the same time, the case protects the device from scratches and damage caused by drops, not only whilst cycling but also during everyday use. Unlike solutions with clamping arms, the display, edges of the case and controls remain fully accessible. This makes the Quad-Lock system a particularly seamless solution for cyclists who wish to use their smartphone and mount together at all times.

The Quad Lock kit comprises a handlebar mount with a bayonet lock and a matching protective case; together, they weigh 93 grams and are very well made. An Allen key is required for assembly; the arm positions the smartphone centrally above the stem, which looks great and offers excellent aerodynamics. The bayonet lock clicks firmly into place and secures the phone absolutely securely in all conditions. The protective case is slim, robust and suitable for everyday use. Quad Lock also offers an extensive range of accessories, including various adaptors for aero handlebars or for mounting on the stem. In addition, there are custom-fit rain covers available for most Quad Lock smartphone cases.
