The tour planner Komoot is investing in a new design for its website and app following the sale. A more modern look and improved user guidance should make the user experience more intuitive and simplify it. For long-time users, however, Komoot should continue to feel familiar.
Within just a few years, the outdoor app Komoot has become one of the leading providers of online tour planning for cyclists and hikers. The company, which has been based in Potsdam since 2010, primarily relies on content from the user community. The basic service can be used free of charge, while various premium functions require a subscription, which most recently cost 5 euros per month. According to Komoot, around 50 million people worldwide use the website and app; the company does not disclose the number of paying customers.
After the surprising sale of the service in spring 2025 to the Italian company Bending Spoons, many users feared that Komoot could now become more expensive and less convenient. Bending Spoons has bought several companies in the recent past and subsequently made large parts of its workforce redundant. The Milan-based company's portfolio includes numerous online applications, including well-known service programmes such as Evernote and WeTransfer. A large proportion of the 150 employees at Komoot were also made redundant following the takeover.
Komoot has now announced news in the form of a comprehensive redesign of the website and app with a more modern look and improved user guidance. Images have been significantly enhanced, and revised colours, fonts, symbols and illustrations appear more modern and intuitive. At the same time, the core navigation and functionality of Komoot remain unchanged, so that the route planner feels familiar even to long-time users despite the new design. "It was important to us to keep the tried and tested and only change what really makes it easier to use," explains Tom Eldred, Product Manager at Komoot.
According to the Komoot team, they collected and utilised feedback from 110 personal interviews and over 3,000 online surveys. Komoot has also announced new features for use on the move: These include a new offline mode on the Apple Watch and live navigation updates on smartphones. For 2025, Komoot is also planning community heatmaps and optimised highlights based on users' experiences to inspire others on their next adventure.
