After a software update, many Garmin watches and bike computers got stuck. They could no longer be used in a continuous loop known as a boot loop. The solution to the Garmin problem is now available.

A phenomenon that users of Garmin watches and bike computers have observed has been dubbed the "triangle of death". After an update, their devices would freeze - only a blue triangle could be seen on the start screen. The Garmin logo sometimes did not disappear even after a restart. A faulty update was to blame. Anyone who did not use the watch or bike computer during the update period will not notice any problems. The all-clear has been given for these users: they will not experience any problems. Only those who installed the update within a very short period of time are affected.

Garmin problem: different solutions

The first step is to restart the appliance. To do this, the switch-on/LIGHT button on the device must be pressed until the device switches off. This can take up to 15 seconds. Then press the same button to restart the appliance. In the best case scenario, it will now start normally. Users should then synchronise it with the Garmin Connect app on their smartphone or via the Garmin Express application on a computer.

If the Garmin problem is not solved, a different solution must be selected depending on the model:

Delete affected device files

  • Connect the device to a Windows computer using the power/data cable. Once the device has been recognised, locate the Garmin device drive on the computer and open the GARMIN folder.
  • Locate the RemoteSW folder and open it.
  • Search for and delete the CPE.bin file
  • Disconnect the device from the computer. The Garmin problem should be resolved.

If this does not work, the bike computer must be reset:

  • Press and release the switch-on button.
  • Continue to hold down only the Lap/Reset and Start/Stop buttons.
  • Release the Lap/Reset and Start/Stop buttons when the Garmin logo is no longer displayed.
  • The clock should restart and return to the set-up screen. However, the device must now be set up again. All settings will be lost after resetting.

Smartwatches (e.g. epix, fenix)

To solve the Garmin problem with sports watches, the following is required:

  • Access to a Windows or Mac computer.
  • Garmin Express must be installed on your computer.
  • Power/data cable for your watch.
  • Your Garmin Connect login details
  • Open Garmin Express on your computer.
  • Press and hold the switch-on/LIGHT button on the clock until it switches off.
  • Press and hold the START/STOP button.
  • Continue to hold down the START/STOP button and connect the clock to the computer.
  • Press and hold the START/STOP button and select the Add device option in Garmin Express.
  • Wait up to 60 seconds for Garmin Express to recognise the watch. As soon as the watch has been recognised, you can release the START/STOP button.
  • When prompted in Garmin Express, complete the process of adding the device. This includes logging in with your Garmin Connect credentials.
  • The watch should synchronise with Garmin Express. Once synchronisation is complete, you can disconnect the watch from the computer. The watch should start normally.
