The highlight of the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar - there is also the cheaper 1040 version without the solar cells in the display - is its integrated solar panel, which charges the battery. Garmin promises a maximum of 20 minutes more device runtime per hour of use. During the Badlands gravel race under the Andalusian sun, we achieved an additional 10 hours of device runtime in energy-saving mode during a total ride time of 45 hours, which corresponds to four and a half minutes per hour; we managed the full distance without power from the socket. Compared to the older 1030 and the Edge 1040 without solar power, we noticed the matt display of the GPS device, which lacks a little brilliance at the same lighting level.
The new layout has been significantly improved, allowing data and graphics to be entered more quickly. The training functions, such as Stamina or adaptive training, which can be used to monitor individual training status, are clear and easy to understand even for newcomers. 32 gigabytes of internal memory is a top value, the double capacity of the solar version seems almost oversized. The GPS positioning is absolutely precise as long as the satellite signals can be received without any shadowing. The unbreakable aluminium quarter-mount holder is significantly more robust than its predecessor.
Battery life, 32 gigabytes, the clear operating layout, precise positioning, fast route calculation and the solid holder are good arguments in favour of the Garmin Edge 1040 as a new purchase. On the other hand, you can safely postpone switching from a 1030 Plus with a healthy battery, functioning buttons and an intact display. The solar version only appeals to an exclusive user community. Those who take good care of their data will not utilise the 64 gigabyte capacity. The effectiveness of the solar charging function is heavily dependent on the position of the sun and direction of travel and is only worthwhile for globetrotters without charging options.
