Test: E-road bike from Wilier - Wilier Cento1 HybridPhoto: Kerstin Leicht
With the Ebikemotion rear-wheel drive, Wilier shows how light and simple an e-road bike can be. Our test shows whether there are any compromises behind the concept

With the Mahle Ebikemotion drive, the Wilier can hardly be distinguished from a classic competition road bike, at least visually. The classic diamond frame made of carbon with a tube diameter that does not appear exaggerated conceals the battery in the down tube, while the motor itself is only visible as a rear hub motor between the brake disc and cassette on closer inspection. The bike also comes closest to a classic racing bike in terms of weight and therefore handling: at just over twelve kilograms, it is one of the lightest in its class. The bike also reacts correspondingly light-footedly during steering manoeuvres, and riding above the motor's cut-off speed of 25 km/h feels less cumbersome than with other e-road bikes. With the reasonable weight and the fully-fledged dual drive, which also offers low gears for climbing, long-term use without the motor is also conceivable. The very high frame stiffness in comparison ensures that the bike also feels stable and precise downhill, where other bikes have weaknesses.

The drive assistance can be switched on with a single button on the top tube and adjusted in three stages. Only an LED ring provides information about the riding mode and battery status, which is not self-explanatory. If you want more information, you have to read it out via a smartphone; the associated app has a huge range of functions. It can also be used to navigate or switch on the motor assistance depending on the rider's heart rate.

The maximum rated power is 250 watts; a special feature of the drive is that the assistance levels can be individually programmed via the associated app. The power is not dependent on the rider's own power output or torque, but switches on digitally: either it pushes or it doesn't push. However, as use is generally limited to climbs, the testers did not find this to be a problem. With the lightweight battery, the bike offers relatively little range in assist mode, but this can be increased with an additional battery in the frame triangle for an extra charge.
