With the top version of the Gain, the Spanish manufacturer Orbea presents a minimalist and extremely light e-road bike. Our test clarifies whether the high price is worth it

Price 8,599 Euro Weight 11.7 kilos

The most expensive version of the Orbea Gain shines with an elegant look and exquisite high-end parts. The carbon frameset with integrated battery is extremely cleanly finished and the riding position is sporty. Shifting is at the touch of a button with Shimano's classy Dura Ace Di2 groupset, while the crankset and brakes are also from the Japanese company's high-end ensemble. The wheels are spoked with carbon rims from Mavic. The opulent equipment means that the Orbea is extremely light at 11.7 kilos. The stable frame and relatively light wheels convert powerful acceleration into propulsion immediately and without loss.

The inconspicuous rear hub motor - the bike owes its undisguised racing bike look primarily to its small size - increases the weight in the rear triangle, but there is no noticeable influence on the handling. The Gain M10i rides almost like a "normal" road bike, implements steering impulses directly and stays cleanly on the chosen line even in fast bends. Thanks to the 28 millimetre wide tyres, even longer distances can be covered comfortably, although the seat post doesn't exactly shine with its generous suspension travel. The Ebikemotion X35 hub motor only provides assistance up to 25 km/h and should therefore start to work even for moderately trained riders on climbs of around three per cent or more.

Because the drive has no torque control, its power delivery cannot be controlled via pedal pressure, but only digitally: when the crank turns - no matter how fast - the motor delivers the maximum power of the selected support level. The small battery also limits the range; it could be almost doubled with an additional battery in the frame triangle, at a cost of 579 euros and approx. 2.5 kilograms extra weight. All in all, the Orbea leaves a good impression: the Gain M10i is an expensive but very agile and well-equipped E-road bike. The drive variant is simple, but very light. As the motor is used almost exclusively on the climbs, its weight advantage outweighs the need for sensitive control.
