The development of the current Allez Sprint began where many models end: with the top-of-the-range model. According to Specialised, the well-known Tarmac SL7 served as the template for the frame shape, geometry and aerodynamics. Numerous tube profiles were taken directly from the carbon road bike and adapted to the requirements of an aluminium frame. The aim was to combine the aerodynamic advantages of a modern road bike with the specific properties of aluminium.
Particularly striking is the distinctive aerodynamic design. The head tube, down tube and fork are clearly modelled on the Tarmac. Added to this is a fully integrated cable routing system, which not only ensures a clean look but is also designed to reduce aerodynamic drag. According to the manufacturer, the current Allez Sprint is 41 seconds faster than its predecessor over a distance of 40 kilometres.
The Specialized Allez Sprint Comp plays a special role in today’s road bike market. Whilst many manufacturers now use aluminium primarily in the entry-level segment, Specialised is taking a different approach and using it to develop an uncompromisingly sporty performance bike.
At the heart of the frame lies what is known as Smartweld technology. Specifically, this technology relates to the transitions between tube-to-tube joints. By optimising the connections between the head tube, top tube and down tube, the aluminium frame is designed to offer stiffness comparable to that of a carbon frame. At the same time, Specialized uses intricately shaped aluminium tubes and complex manufacturing processes to improve not only stiffness but also power transfer and handling. The area around the bottom bracket and down tube is particularly striking. Both components are machined from a single piece and are designed to ensure particularly direct power transfer.
This design has a clear objective: maximum efficiency under load. Particularly during hard accelerations, sprints or attacks, as little energy as possible should be lost due to torsional flex. The Allez Sprint thus remains true to its role as a road bike for performance-oriented riders.
In keeping with its purpose, the Allez Sprint Comp features the race geometry familiar from the Tarmac. Short head tubes and an extended riding position promote an aerodynamic posture on the bike. At the same time, the geometry promises direct and precise handling, which is set to come into its own particularly on fast courses and in tight bends.
As such, the model is aimed less at those seeking comfort or beginners, and more at riders who appreciate a sporty, responsive riding experience. Whether in criterium races, on fast training laps or at challenging amateur events, the Allez Sprint has been clearly designed with dynamism in mind.
Despite its clear focus on stiffness and performance, Specialised aims to minimise the typical drawbacks of an aluminium frame. To achieve this, it features lowered seat stays, a FACT carbon fork and a carbon seatpost, which has been carried over directly from the Tarmac. These components are designed to absorb vibrations and improve riding comfort over long distances. Whilst the Allez Sprint does not quite match the compliance of modern endurance road bikes, the bike nevertheless demonstrates just how far aluminium frames have come in recent years.
In the Comp version, Specialized pairs the frame with Shimano’s latest 105 groupset. The 2x12-speed drivetrain is a well-established groupset in the mid-range sports segment and offers a wide range of gear ratios for both flat and mountainous routes. Braking is provided by hydraulic disc brakes from the same series.
The wheelsets feature DT Swiss R470 rims. They are robust and reliable, though they are not amongst the lightest components on the market. Together with the Body Geometry Power Sport saddle, this results in a setup that is clearly designed for sporty everyday use and road cycling training.
