Van Rysel has, with the RCR-G and the EDR-G Two gravel bikes have been unveiled, each catering to different needs. Both models feature tyre clearance of up to 50 mm and carbon frames, but differ in their intended use. Choosing between the two bikes is easier once you know how you intend to use them.
The RCR-G was developed for competition. The Van Rysel engineers call it “Fast Gravel”. The high-modulus carbon frame weighs 885 g in size M without paintwork, whilst the fork tips the scales at 415 g. The complete bike, fitted with SRAM RED AXS components, weighs 7.7 kg. This weight distribution makes a noticeable difference during acceleration and on climbs.
Aerodynamics were at the heart of the development process. Van Rysel used CFD analyses and wind tunnel tests to shape the frame. Compared with its predecessor, the GCR, the RCR-G saves 8.6 watts. This advantage is particularly noticeable on fast sections and during longer tarmac stretches, which are common in modern gravel races.
The geometry is based on road bike standards. The handling is direct and precise, which helps on technical sections and during quick changes of direction. The 27.2 mm seatpost filters out high-frequency vibrations, whilst remaining stiff enough for powerful accelerations. The integration of the monocoque cockpit on the RED version further reduces weight and improves aerodynamics.
The RCR-G features three bottle cage mounts and a Bento Box mount on the top tube. This setup is sufficient for races lasting up to several hours. However, for longer tours with luggage, additional mounting points are required. Chainring compatibility of up to 50T in a 1x setup and 52T in a 2x setup allows for a range of gear ratios depending on the race route.
The EDR-G takes a different approach. The carbon frame features a lay-up that prioritises comfort over long distances. The weight is 8.75 kg for the GRX version in size M. The extra 950 g compared with the RCR-G is hardly noticeable on multi-day tours, especially when it comes at the cost of increased comfort and versatility.
The integrated toolbox sets the EDR-G apart from most gravel bikes. The system is derived from the Van Rysel EDR road bike and has been adapted for the gravel bike. The storage space inside the frame remains accessible even when the panniers are fully packed. The kit includes a compact inner tube, a multi-tool, two tyre levers and a mini-pump that inflates up to 4 bar. This kit enables repairs to be carried out without the need for an external tool bag.
The frame offers more than 15 mounting points for bottle cages, panniers and accessories. This flexibility makes the EDR-G the ideal base for bikepacking set-ups. The geometry has been designed for stability, particularly when the bike is loaded. Handling remains predictable and safe even when carrying luggage.
The Deda Gera handlebar with a 24-degree flare is fitted as standard. The wider lower handlebar position improves control on technical descents and rough terrain. The various grip positions help to reduce numbness and pain on long rides. Tyre clearance of up to 50 mm allows you to switch between fast slick tyres for tarmac and wide knobby tyres for loose terrain.
The EDR-G is also available with a RockShox Rudy XPLR suspension fork. The 40 mm of travel absorbs impacts on rough terrain and improves traction. The weight increases to 9.7 kg for the Force AXS version with a suspension fork. This model costs 3,499 euros.
A suspension fork is a sensible choice for riders who frequently tackle technical trails or prioritise comfort over speed. For fast rides on mixed terrain, a rigid fork remains the better option, as it offers a more direct response and is lighter.
The RCR-G is ideal for cyclists who compete in or train for gravel races. Its aerodynamics and light weight really come into their own at high average speeds. Typical uses include high-speed races of between 80 and 200 km on mixed terrain. The bike is also ideal for fast after-work rides and intensive training sessions.
The EDR-G was designed for long rides. Bikepacking trips, multi-day tours and ultra-distance events are its core applications. The bike carries luggage securely and offers enough comfort to spend several days in the saddle. The integrated toolbox and numerous attachment points make the EDR-G self-sufficient. The EDR-G is also better suited to those new to gravel cycling, as it is more forgiving and offers greater comfort.
Both bikes handle tarmac, gravel, forest tracks and easy trails. The differences lie in the details. The RCR-G performs best on fast gravel tracks and tarmac. Its aerodynamics offer measurable advantages here. On technical singletrack with plenty of roots and stones, the race setup reaches its limits, particularly on longer descents.
The EDR-G is more at home on rough terrain. Its comfort-oriented set-up and the option of a suspension fork broaden its range of use. The EDR-G tackles sandy sections, cobblestones and long gravel tracks with less fatigue. On tarmac, it’s slightly slower than the RCR-G, but the difference is only noticeable at sporty speeds.
The RCR-G starts at 3,199 euros for the Rival AXS version. This model weighs 8.6 kg in size M and features aluminium wheels. The Force AXS version costs €4,199, weighs 8.2 kg and comes with VR 35 carbon wheels. The top-of-the-range model, featuring RED AXS and an integrated carbon cockpit, is priced at €6,599 and weighs 7.8 kg. All RCR-G models are fitted with SRAM XPLR groupsets and are available at Decathlon.
The EDR-G starts at 2,199 euros with Shimano GRX 610 groupset and DT Swiss G1800 wheels. It weighs 8.75 kg. The Force AXS version with VR32 carbon wheels costs €3,199 and weighs 8.85 kg. The suspension fork version with Force AXS is priced at €3,499.
Van Rysel had 30 testers ride the EDR-G over 25,000 km. The two-year development phase involved a range of rider types and usage scenarios. Ultra-distance cyclist Juliette Coquert tested the bike on a self-supported tour of Europe covering 10,000 km. This feedback was incorporated into the final version.
The RCR-G was developed in collaboration with riders from the Decathlon CMA CGM WorldTour Team. Several prototypes featuring different carbon lay-ups were tested. The riders assessed stiffness, responsiveness and control. The final lay-up strikes a balance between these characteristics for racing.
Both models will be launched on 24 August 2026. Van Rysel will publish further information on regional availability ahead of the launch. The bikes will be available in sizes XS to XL; the Rival AXS version of the RCR-G is also available in XXS.
