With the Upon, Spanish bicycle manufacturer Megamo has presented an e-road bike that is consistently orientated towards the classic racing bike. Unlike many competitor products that are based on gravel or endurance geometries, the Upon was designed from the ground up as a pure road racing bike with electric assistance. This is reflected in the road bike geometry, the road-specific cockpit and the special motor set-up.

The fully integrated carbon SL frame works with a geometry that deliberately picks up on classic racing bike characteristics. Experienced and sporty racing cyclists should feel right at home here, not everyday cyclists. A 27.2 millimetre slim carbon seatpost is designed to provide additional comfort over long distances thanks to targeted material flex.

Avinox drive with high peak power

At the heart of the Upon is the Avinox motor system, which delivers an enormous peak output of 1300 watts and a high torque of up to 150 Newton metres. That is significantly more than the competition. Nevertheless, the Avinox units remain slim and light. But one thing is clear: Megamo is not relying on a light drive à la TQ or Fazua - but on massive power. Depending on the model, either the slightly weaker M2 or the top-of-the-range M2S motor is used.

The Upon's specific engine tuning, which prioritises progressive, even power delivery over spontaneous torque peaks, is intended to be decisive for road use. This should feel particularly natural at a constant cadence and in group situations.

600 watt hours in the down tube

Power is supplied by a permanently integrated 600 watt-hour battery, which should enable a range of between 70 and 120 kilometres depending on the support level, topography and rider performance. This capacity is designed for typical road use, such as long-distance journeys, training sessions lasting several hours or races for everyone.

The Upon rolls on 700c wheels with 42 millimetre wide Vittoria Corsa Pro Control tyres. This tyre width is within the usual range of current e-road bikes and offers a good balance between rolling resistance, comfort and safety on different road surfaces. The integrated carbon cockpit with cable routing that runs completely inside the frame follows the clean cockpit trend of modern road bikes.

Target group and area of application

Megamo defines its primary target group as classic road cyclists between the ages of 45 and 70 who have many years of cycling experience and regularly take part in club rides or sportifs. The electric assistance should serve as a pragmatic tool that maintains speed, range and connectivity to group rides without changing the basic riding experience.

The manufacturer sees ambitious leisure riders aged between 30 and 50 who want to increase their training volume or tackle more challenging routes as a secondary target group. The following applies to both groups: The motor expands the possibilities, but does not replace your own performance.

Prices and equipment

Megamo offers three equipment variants: The top model Upon 05 is equipped with Shimano Ultegra Di2 and the M2S motor and costs 6,499 euros. The Upon 15 cw also uses the M2S motor, but combines it with Shimano 105 Di2 and is available for €5,999. The entry-level model Upon 20 works with the M2 motor and mechanical Shimano 105 gears and will cost 3,999 euros.

The target weight of the bike is less than 14 kilograms, although the manufacturer is still waiting for the final production confirmation.

Classification in the market environment

With the Upon, Megamo is addressing a specific gap in the e-road segment: while many manufacturers are focussing on versatile platforms with gravel potential, the Spanish company is concentrating uncompromisingly on road use. For riders with mixed terrain requirements, Megamo refers to the Along, the E-Gravel model with the same Avinox motor platform. The blatant power of the Avinox motor certainly offers less added value on the road than on MTB terrain - but the slim design and efficiency of the motor also has advantages here. For minimalists, however, there are definitely more suitable e-drives.
