Following her title win at the Road World Championships in Montréal, Demi Vollering has been presented with a bespoke S-Works Tarmac SL9. The World Champion’s bike, finished in classic white, combines the rainbow colours with graphic elements that symbolise the long journey to the top. The bike immediately crowned its racing debut with yet another title.
To mark Demi Vollering’s first world championship title in the road race, Specialized has unveiled a specially designed S-Works Tarmac SL9. The design is called ‘Equation of Speed’ and is intended to show that sporting success does not depend on a single decision. Instead, it arises from the interplay between the rider, the bike and the course, as well as from numerous adjustments and small improvements.
The predominantly white base coat echoes the classic look of a world champion’s bike. This is complemented by the iconic rainbow stripes, which are particularly striking around the seat tube and seat post. Vollerings’ name, the Dutch flag and the ‘World Champ 2026’ lettering make the bike a unique, personalised piece.
According to a statement from the manufacturer, Specialized, the overlapping graphic elements are intended to illustrate the development process behind peak performance. Requirements are first translated into technical objectives, then simulated, tested and repeatedly refined. Each layer of the paint finish thus symbolises a further step in the development process. The new Tarmac SL9 is designed to make this normally invisible process visible – right up to the decisive moment at the finish line.
Vollering won the 180.1-kilometre World Championships road race in Montréal on 26 September 2026. After launching an attack 38.5 kilometres from the finish, the Dutch rider was initially caught again. On the uphill home straight, she eventually prevailed in the sprint ahead of Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney and Elisa Longo Borghini. For Vollering, it was her first world title in the elite road race.
This victory also marked the first road world title for the Tarmac SL9, which was launched in 2026. In the elite men’s race on Sunday of the World Championships weekend, Specialized rider and joint favourite Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) was unable to counter the decisive attack by the eventual world champion, Brandon McNulty. As usual, Vollering’s road bike was set up for the World Championships and fitted, amongst other things, with Roval Rapide CLX III wheels and Specialized Turbo Cotton TLR tyres.
Vollering’s newly painted world champion’s bike made its racing debut on 3 October 2026 at the European Championships in Slovenia. The debut ended in yet another victory: Vollering launched an attack on the final climb, around 14 kilometres from the finish, and held on to her lead right to the line. In doing so, she won her first race in the rainbow jersey and, at the same time, successfully defended her European title.
Whilst Specialized has opted for a white base colour and a comparatively understated rainbow design for Vollering’s Tarmac SL9, Colnago has taken a different approach with the Brandon McNulty’s World Championship bike a different approach. The American rider’s Y1Rs combine glossy black carbon with large swathes of rainbow colours, glitter effects and personal references to the USA and the World Championships venue, Canada.
Even setting aside its special paint finish, the S-Works Tarmac SL9 is one of the best competition road bikes currently available. In the detailed Review of the Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL9 The model achieved an overall mark of 1.4.
