Simon Geschke was born in East Berlin in 1986 and began his professional cycling career in 2008 as a stagiaire (test rider; editor's note) with the former World Tour team Milram. From 2009 to 2011, he rode for Team Skil-Shimano and later for the successor teams Argos-Shimano, Giant-Shimano, Team Giant-Alpecin and Team Sunweb. He then joined the CCC team in 2019. Since 2021, Geschke has been under contract with Team Cofidis, for whom he currently rides.
Simon Geschke: The greatest successes
The German cyclist has already taken part in many races, including the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia. Geschke, whose adopted home is Freiburg im Breisgau, is a mountain specialist and feels at home on hilly terrain. He celebrated his greatest success by winning the 17th stage of the Tour de France in 2015. He also made a name for himself in the Tour of France in 2022 by leading the mountain classification for ten stages - in the end, Geschke was crowned overall winner of the Tour de France. Jonas Vingegaard still replaced him. Geschke also finished second in the Giro d'Italia in 2014 and third in 2015. In 2017, the German helped his team-mate Tom Dumoulin to overall victory in the Tour of Italy as an important mountain helper. He also celebrated a stage win at the Criterium International in 2011.
In 2022, Geschke was honoured as Berlin's Sportsman of the Year. He led the mountain classification at the Tour der France from stage 9 to 18 - longer than any German before him. In the same year, he was also named Germany's Cyclist of the Year.
Geschke was repeatedly thwarted by crashes and illness. In 2015, he broke his collarbone after a collision with an escort vehicle, but shortly afterwards celebrated what was probably his greatest success as a stage winner at the Tour de France. In 2019, he suffered a fractured elbow after a crash on his season debut and was unlucky again five weeks later when he crashed again at the Tour of Catalunya and broke his collarbone and four ribs again. He was then unable to compete at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo despite being nominated because he tested positive for Covid-19 shortly beforehand.
