At first glance, Shimano's new 105 groupset is almost indistinguishable from the more expensive Dura-Ace and Ultegra groupsets. The test reveals whether the parts ensemble also aspires to higher technical standards. (TOUR 11/2005)

Since the first 105 groupset was introduced more than 20 years ago, the three digits have stood for modern, reliable road bike technology at an affordable price. However, the number three in Shimano's groupset hierarchy has so far been less suitable for show performances. The technical and, above all, visual gap to the more expensive Dura-Ace and Ultegra groupsets was too great. The new 105 generation, now in its sixth generation, could shed this wallflower image. The TOUR editors rubbed their eyes in amazement when the first complete groupset arrived at the editorial office. Where, please, is there going to be room for the Ultegra groupset in the future when the 105 already shines so brightly?
