Will the Shimano 105 groupset work as well in the long term as it did on the first 400 kilometres? That was the dominant question after the first test of the renovated number three from Shimano's range (TOUR 11/05). After all, the ensemble designed for hobby cyclists surprised us with its functionality, which was hardly inferior to the higher-quality Dura-Ace and Ultegra groupsets.
The Munich A-class amateur Christian Brockhoff was therefore given the job of endurance tester to ride the groupset, mounted on an aluminium-carbon frame from Scott, for a year. The 28-year-old meticulously recorded training sessions, weather conditions and technical anomalies in a logbook.
The long-term test shows that Shimano not only focussed on function but also on durability when developing the 105 groupset. Pleasing: With the ten-speed 105, which is fitted to complete bikes for around 1000 euros, a component group with top technology and high reliability is already available in the lower mid-range.
