Individual test: Campagnolo Athena EPSPhoto: Markus Greber
The fact that the Athena EPS shares many components with higher groupsets benefits its function - the shifting works flawlessly and is a real step forward. The best ergonomics and long service life of the wearing parts are further plus points. The Power Torque crankset, which is difficult to remove, could be improved.
Manufacturer Campagnolo sees the EPS version of the Athena component group as a direct competitor to Shimano's Di2. With its state-of-the-art technology, the Athena should finally attract more buyers than the mechanical groupset has managed to do so far, despite good test results. TOUR has put the Athena EPS through its paces.

Six months after Campagnolo's electronic shifting technology EPS (Electronic Power Shift) for the Record and Super Record groupsets came onto the market, Campagnolo is launching another, more affordable version. The technology is not being passed down step by step as usual: EPS skips one hierarchical level - the Chorus groupset - and electrifies the lower-level Athena. It is intended to make the push-button gearbox affordable for a wider audience and to compete with Ultegra Di2 for market share in the future.

The fact that the Athena EPS shares many components with higher groupsets benefits its function - the shifting works flawlessly and is a real step forward. The best ergonomics and long service life of the wearing parts are further plus points. The Power Torque crankset, which is difficult to remove, could be improved.
