With the brand new "Force" road bike groupset, the American component manufacturer SRAM wants to take market share away from the established companies Shimano and Campagnolo. The world's first laboratory and practical test of the new components shows what the chances are. (TOUR 9/2006)

It's nice to see a company daring to challenge Shimano and Campagnolo again - that's what many thought when the US manufacturer SRAM announced at Eurobike 2005 that it would be launching its own component groupsets for road bikes within a year. After all, the competition between the market leaders had recently lost momentum and there had been no real innovations in road bike components for some time. It was hoped that a new competitor could provide a breath of fresh air. In the meantime, the announcement has become a reality. In June, SRAM started series production of two road bike groupsets. According to the self-confident announcement, the top-of-the-range "Force" groupset will compete against the top products from Shimano and Campagnolo, Dura-Ace and Record, and will be priced between the two rivals. Target group: racers and demanding leisure cyclists. The technically closely related, slightly cheaper "Rival" groupset, on the other hand, is aimed at price-conscious racing cyclists. Its direct competitors are Shimano's Ultegra and Campagnolo's Centaur.
