It's nice to see a company daring to challenge Shimano and Campagnolo again - that's what many thought when the US manufacturer SRAM announced at Eurobike 2005 that it would be launching its own component groupsets for road bikes within a year. After all, the competition between the market leaders had recently lost momentum and there had been no real innovations in road bike components for some time. It was hoped that a new competitor could provide a breath of fresh air. In the meantime, the announcement has become a reality. In June, SRAM started series production of two road bike groupsets. According to the self-confident announcement, the top-of-the-range "Force" groupset will compete against the top products from Shimano and Campagnolo, Dura-Ace and Record, and will be priced between the two rivals. Target group: racers and demanding leisure cyclists. The technically closely related, slightly cheaper "Rival" groupset, on the other hand, is aimed at price-conscious racing cyclists. Its direct competitors are Shimano's Ultegra and Campagnolo's Centaur.
