Pedal plates are usually adjusted so that the ball of the big toe is exactly above the pedal axle. In special cases, however, a different cleat position may be appropriate.

Some triathletes mount the plates much further back to protect their calf muscles before the subsequent run. Riders with Achilles tendon problems can also benefit from plates that are offset to the rear because the strain on the tendons is reduced. The pedal manufacturer Speedplay offers a conversion kit for such cases, with which the Speedplay cleats can be moved backwards by up to 14 millimetres and forwards by up to 5 millimetres compared to the normal position. The adapter is made of aluminium and is mounted instead of the usual base plate. The unrivalled low overall height of the Speedplay system therefore remains unchanged. However, the shift allows the tips of the feet to reach into the pivoting radius of the front wheel, which increases the risk of falling in tight bends. The conversion kit is suitable for the Speedplay Zero, X-Series and Light Action standards.
