The Van Rysel D100 is aimed at beginners to smart training as well as cyclists who wish to complete structured sessions and build a solid foundation without pushing for peak performance. According to the manufacturer, the direct drive operates quietly and reduces tyre wear compared to a traditional roller trainer with rear-wheel contact. However, with a maximum resistance of 600 watts and a gradient simulation of up to six per cent, its scope of use is clearly defined: this power level is sufficient for base training rides, tempo intervals and many virtual routes. Very powerful sprints or realistically simulated long climbs, on the other hand, are beyond its capabilities.
Van Rysel states that the power measurement has an accuracy of plus or minus five per cent. This is sufficient for controlling many training programmes, but is less precise than that of higher-end smart trainers. The D100 has a foldable base and can be stored more compactly after a session. The Van Rysel RCR is, by contrast, designed for performance-oriented riders and virtual races. With up to 2,800 watts of resistance, a simulated gradient of up to 27 per cent and an accuracy of plus or minus one per cent, it provides significantly greater reserves for sprints, short, intense efforts and mountainous routes. According to the manufacturer, the RCR can generate its own energy whilst pedalling and can therefore be used without a mains socket. When folded away, its feet are designed to make storage and transport easier. When connected to the mains, the system also offers a descent simulation. The price is 799.99 euros >> available here.
Training practice therefore remains the key factor: the D100 is the more affordable option for regular indoor sessions with moderate power requirements. Those who achieve high peak wattages, want to experience virtual climbs as realistically as possible, or wish to track their performance data more precisely will find the RCR to be the more suitable model.
