The design statement for affordable roller trainers for beginners comes from Italy - where else would it come from? Elite makes it with the Tuo to give the old-fashioned principle of the roller trainer a new and attractive packaging. The wheel comes in a cube with brushed aluminium cheeks and the front struts of the stand are made of beech wood. But the inner values of the Elite Tuo are also just right.
In particular, the accuracy of the power display is good, although the power is not actually measured (as with the higher-quality Elite smart trainers), but is determined indirectly from the data of the spindown. This means that the Elite roller trainer with friction roller provides a good basis for twinning.
The ride feel is decent despite the relatively low flywheel mass, and the brakes are powerful even when pedalling slowly (K3 training is possible). The control in Zwift is fast, whereas the in-house Elite app controls slowly and is not very responsive. Calibration took many attempts during our tests. Once the work is done, the Elite Tuo folds up relatively compactly, and its 11.9 kilograms are also easy to carry.
The Elite Tuo is technically the best of the rear-wheel-drive roller trainers, which also have smart functions for using Zwift, and displays the power output much more accurately than most other affordable roller trainers in the wheel-on category.
