Used bikes from professional teams are tempting for cycling fans. Visually, they are always an eye-catcher - but technically they are not always a good buy. The bikes are absolutely geared towards performance and not comfort - the extremely sporty Seating position may not be possible, or only with considerable effort changed become. The history of the bikes can be very different; it is highly likely that the bike was ridden for many kilometres - even in bad weather. If you know the name of the racer who rode the bike, you can at least speculate a little: Did he ride the spring classics or did he start racing later in the season? Or maybe you're lucky and it's a spare bike that has only occasionally had a taste of racing. Completely new team bikes are also on offer. Test rides are rarely possible. Both the teams and intermediaries are possible sources for the purchase:
The company Bikeroom, which specialises in selling used bikes online, is based in Brescia, Italy. Former professional bikes are a focal point - the shop has contracts with several teams. For example, a large selection of BMC bikes from the 2022 season of the AG2R-Citroen team was on offer. The quantity of bikes fluctuates greatly: in September there were 250 professional bikes on the website, but they were sold quickly. A BMC frame was available for as little as €2000 - complete bikes started at €3300 and the Specialized Tarmac SL7 from Remco Evenepoel was sold for just under €20,000. Real cycling fans will be pleased to see that the names of the previous owners are listed. If the rider was rather unknown, the bike is also cheaper. The Scott Foil RC 2023 from Vlad van Mechelen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) was offered for 3892 euros. An attractive price for the young rider from the development team. Bikeroom promised TOUR that team bikes would soon be back in the shop: "At the end of November and beginning of December we will be posting new bikes from teams that have ridden in the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the Vuelta," said a company spokesperson. Bikeroom is based in Italy and offers the legally required one-year guarantee on used bikes.
Cykom was originally known as "ProOwnedCycling". It was founded in Copenhagen in 2015 and specialised from the outset in selling bikes, clothing and equipment from professional teams online. The business idea arose from the observation that professional cycling teams regularly had surplus equipment and clothing due to changing sponsors. There are currently more than 50 road and time trial bikes on offer from teams such as Ineos Grenadiers, Lotto-Dstny, Mitchelton-Scott, Qhubeka, dsm, Astana and Jayco-AlUla. The bikes cost between 3000 and 8000 euros. For example, there is currently a time trial bike from Simon Yates: the Scott Plasma HMX5 TT is already a few years old and equipped with Shimano-Ultegra cranks. It comes with a two-year warranty.
As a bike sponsor, Canyon supports several teams. They have to return their bikes at the end of the season and some of them are then sold in the web shop. Road bikes and time trial bikes from the Movistar, Arkea-Samsic and Canyon//SRAM Racing teams are currently on offer. The prices are between 5600 and 8000 euros. At the end of the season, the bikes from the current season will be added to the shop. Canyon promises a two-year warranty and six-year guarantee on the used professional bikes - in addition, all bikes are technically inspected.
