The buzzword "system integration" has been around for several years in the world of road bikes. This refers to the idea of harmonising the frame, fork and other components in such a way that the riding characteristics and measured values are improved compared to a bike built from standard components. One of the pioneers was aluminium frame pioneer Gary Klein, who in 1994 developed a special fork and an integrated steering bearing with a matching stem to go with his pioneering "Quantum Pro". The Klein brand is history, but the idea of system integration lives on - spun further by innovative brands such as Cannondale and Specialized.
