Everything to do with cycling shorts
TOUR readers know that the "seat leather" in your trousers is no longer leather. But the most important cycling gear still harbours secrets even for connoisseurs: Here are the answers to many questions about cycling legwear. (TOUR 7/2007)

Have cycling shorts evolved in the last ten years?
Yes, especially the seat padding. The materials used for the inserts have developed to such an extent that nobody misses the deerskin of the past. Most modern seat pads dry quickly and remain supple and durable. An important innovation is elasticated inserts, which are mainly found in expensive models. They can increase seating comfort, put less strain on the seams and the edges of such seat cushions are less prone to chafing.

In addition, the inserts now often consist of heavily pre-moulded multi-component pads (image) with different thicknesses and hard materials. They are a reaction to the increasingly spartan, harder lightweight saddles. They actually turn the insert into a "seat pad" - which for a long time it was only in common parlance. Such inserts cushion the sit bones and some also relieve the perineal area. The cushioning function becomes questionable if (as is usual with gel inserts or air cushions) the suppleness of the insert decreases significantly. The more specific the design of a cycling shorts insert, the better it must fit and sit in the right place. It is generally favourable if the size of the insert varies with the size of the shorts.
