The game is beautifully designed and has a high-quality feel. The race track can be freely placed on the table using puzzle-like pieces, the game figures are miniature cyclists and the game is controlled using beautifully designed cards with various functions. The aim is to get one of your two characters - a sprinter and a rouleur - to the finish line first. Professional game testers praise the game for the fact that, despite its relatively simple rules, it replicates the characteristics of cycling well and the course of the game is very tactical. You have to manage your strength well, you can use the slipstream behind other riders or fellow players, progress is slower uphill and you have to make breakaway attempts at the right time.

  • for 2-4 persons
  • from 10 years
  • One round lasts 30-45 minutes

Allgäu, get set!

This relatively new game is not so much a cycling game as a game of discovery and familiarisation with the Allgäu region, which is staged as a cycling tour. Each participant draws four city maps from the different regions of the Allgäu, which they cycle through in any order. The start and finish of the cycle tour is Kempten. Along the way, the participants must repeatedly draw knowledge questions about the Allgäu or event cards; the latter can speed up or slow down the virtual cycle tour. The game board is an elaborately drawn map of the Allgäu.

This board game for two to four people has been on the cardboard box for several years, but has lost none of its appeal. It was even named Game of the Year in 1992. Players take on the role of a team manager and fight for victory with the clever use of their resources and four racers per team. Aspects of cycling such as slipstreaming or special scoring and the consequences of crashes are also modelled here, and the game is played with dice and cards with certain characteristics. Gaming professionals attest to the game's extremely varied course and suspense right to the end. The comic book look may seem a little outdated to some, but it also gives the game its very own character.

The facts:

  • Racing game
  • for 2-4 persons
  • from 8 years
  • Price: only used, depending on condition from approx. 10 euros

The outlier

This card game also focuses on winning the race and conquering a yellow leader's jersey. Between two and six players aged eight and over can take part, and each round lasts around twenty minutes. One player starts as the runaway with a yellow token; the following players must try to stay in the peloton and choose their pace by playing the appropriate cards so that they do not fall behind. To take on the role of the breakaway, you must play a speed card that is faster than that of the current leader. Inclines, intermediate sprints and headwinds are also displayed as additional handicaps on cards and add variety to the game. Game experts attest to the card game's dense racing atmosphere with minimal rules. This cycling game was also awarded "Game of the Year", although the 1989 honour was awarded several years ago.

The facts:

  • Card game for 2-6 people
  • from 8 years
  • Price: only used, depending on condition 10-15 euros

6-day race

The game board imitates the oval of a cycling track and is suitable for three to eight players aged eight and over. It combines the game pieces with cards and tactically clever slipstreaming with a multiplication of the spaces to be moved. Aspects of cycling in general and the six-day races in particular, such as breakaway attempts, lap wins and sprint finishes, are illustrated by the function of additional cards. The game board with fully occupied grandstands and the interior with the riders' berths is a beautiful hidden object picture that conveys a lot of cycling atmosphere. However, there is also an edition by former cycling promoter Winfried Holtmann in circulation, in which the game board differs from other editions.

The facts:

  • Board game for 3-8 players
  • from 8 years
  • Price: only used, depending on condition from 10 euros

As a student of German and political science, the flawless amateur sportsman once decided to try his luck as a journalist. His passion for racing bikes led him straight to the TOUR editorial team as an intern, which has since become an affair of the heart that has lasted more than 30 years, 16 of them as editor-in-chief. As a - in his own words - "generalist in the cycling niche", he is interested in all topics relating to road bikes (and gravel bikes) and is still particularly enthusiastic about racing today. Highlights of his own career as a racing cyclist include taking part in the TOUR-Transalp, the odd everyman race and regular Alpine tours with friends.
