With a new, particularly short stem length, 60 configurations, custom paint finishes and a weight starting at 299 grams, the German carbon specialist bike ahead composites offers road and gravel cyclists plenty of freedom in terms of ergonomics, integration and customisation with ‘The Cockpit’.
The German carbon specialist bike ahead composites is expanding its integrated handlebar-stem system, “The Cockpit”, to include a particularly short stem length of 77 millimetres. The new version is designed for bikes with modern, longer frame geometries. It has also been developed for innovative platforms featuring 32-inch wheels, where compact stems play a key role in the geometry design.
With the 77-millimetre version, Bike Ahead expands ‘The Cockpit’ into a particularly versatile handlebar-stem system. The range of lengths, widths and drop shapes makes it easy to tailor the setup to the individual rider and bike. Added to this are its light weight, wide frame compatibility, integrated GPS mount and German manufacturing. The concept impresses with its wide range of options and seamless integration.
With the addition of this new size, the system now offers six stem lengths: 77, 88, 99, 111, 122 and 133 millimetres. These, in turn, can be combined with five handlebar widths ranging from 360 to 440 millimetres and two drop variants, resulting in a total of 60 configurations. ‘The Cockpit’ thus caters for a variety of riding positions and uses. Narrow handlebars and short stems allow for compact, aerodynamically oriented set-ups. Wider variants cater to riders seeking greater control or a more comfortable position for long gravel tours. Length, width and handlebar shape can be selected independently of one another and tailored to the rider’s physique, frame geometry and intended use.
There is a choice of two handlebar shapes: a gravel version and a race version. The gravel version features a more pronounced flare on the lower section of the handlebars for better control on loose surfaces. The race version, on the other hand, is modelled on a classic, rounder road bike drop and has less flare. It is designed for riders who prefer a compact and sporty grip position. Combined with the various widths and stem lengths, this creates a flexible system for road and gravel riding.
From a technical perspective, Bike Ahead utilises a carbon frame design described as ‘Sweet Spot Stiffness’. This technology aims to achieve a specific balance between comfort and stiffness – more precisely: a defined flex in the top tube designed to reduce vibrations and shocks. This can help reduce strain on the hands and upper body, particularly on rough roads, long rides and gravel sections. At the same time, the manufacturer promises sufficient structural stiffness for precise handling, direct power transfer and excellent directional stability. The aerodynamically optimised top tube shape is also part of this concept.
Specialised top covers, headset caps and transition spacers are designed to ensure a clean transition between the frame and the cockpit. According to the manufacturer, the system is compatible with bikes from more than 20 brands, including 3T, Basso, BMC, Colnago, Orbea, Rose, Specialized and Wilier.
For models not yet supported, Bike Ahead offers bespoke adapter solutions. Provided the frame and cable routing meet the technical requirements, these can normally be developed within four to six weeks. The company benefits from its in-house design and carbon manufacturing facilities.
The package also includes an integrated, patented GPS mount. This is secured by two carbon tubes inside the cockpit and requires no additional external clamping. According to the manufacturer, the lightest version weighs from 12.5 grams. Longer and angle-adjustable versions are available as optional extras, as well as an action camera mount.
The weight of the carbon cockpit starts at 299 grams and varies depending on size and version. The system is manufactured at Bike Ahead’s carbon factory in Veitshöchheim. In addition to cockpits, the company also produces wheels, seatposts, saddles and bicycle frames there. Its own in-house developments include the “The Frame HT” mountain bike, the “The Superfast” gravel bike and the 32-inch “The Frame 32” mountain bike, which was launched in 2025.
A key feature of the cockpit is a true carbon finish, which leaves the material’s structure visible. On request, the component can be custom-painted to match the bike’s colour scheme. Configurations not in stock can usually be produced within four weeks via the partner network or in-house manufacturing. ‘The Cockpit’ is covered by the statutory warranty and a two-year manufacturer’s guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship. First owners also gain access to a lifetime crash replacement programme with discounted replacement terms.
