Test: Lightweight cranksPhoto: Daniel Simon
Lightweight construction is an ongoing topic for road bike enthusiasts, and more and more manufacturers are realising that cranks offer potential for this. Carbon and titanium are the trump cards with which they want to outdo their established competitors Shimano and Campagnolo. (TOUR 7/2006)

The crankset and bottom bracket together weigh at least 750 grams, making them the heaviest unit in a groupset. After a long period in which smaller parts manufacturers stood almost idly by and watched the industry giants Shimano and Campagnolo, the trend towards compact cranks, which is of interest to amateur athletes, has now given them a tailwind - they are now offering independent, lightweight alternatives. They are consciously going their own way and in some cases clearly differentiating themselves from the market leaders.

SHORT & SHORT
If you want to tune or customise your bike with a high-end crank, you have to dig deep into your pockets. By using titanium and carbon, manufacturers create powerful but delicate works of art. The stiffness of the lightweight constructions is almost at Dura-Ace level and, with the exception of FSA, they clearly beat their role models in terms of weight.
