Ciao, square axle! With an unusually sharp cut, Campagnolo is breaking away from the decades-old technology of the classic square-shaft bottom bracket and switching almost the entire range of components to the new technology called "Ultra Torque" in one fell swoop. TOUR tested the top Record set. (TOUR 11/2006)

For the traditional Campagnolo brand, it was a big step with a long run-up. The Italians are the last major component manufacturer to say goodbye to the traditional cartridge bottom bracket with square axle and attached crank arms. What Shimano, SRAM, FSA and Specialized have been selling for some time is now also available from Campagnolo in a slightly modified form. "Ultra Torque" relocates the bearings next to the bottom bracket shell, with a hollow shaft rotating inside. Campa's special approach (which is very similar to Specialized's): In contrast to the systems from Shimano and FSA, the bottom bracket shaft is bolted in the centre and can therefore be split, the two halves are each firmly connected to the crank arms. The new technology is being introduced with Italian and BSA threads for all groupsets with the exception of the cheapest Xenon.
