There are many reasons to choose a tuning crank: less weight, customised look, adapted ergonomics and gear ratio. We have scoured the market and show in a comparison test what the aftermarket cranks can do and how they fare against the mass-produced cranks from Campagnolo, Shimano and SRAM.

Flowing shapes, cleverly designed crank spiders made of aluminium or carbon - the crank as an individual component magically attracts attention. It's no wonder that many racing cyclists want a customised eye-catcher right here. However, crank tuning is for enthusiasts, as you can see from the prices. The cheapest crank in this test changes hands for 330 euros, the price of the most expensive is more than three times as much. You are rewarded with a weight saving of up to 250 grams compared to a top crank from the large series. But are these beautiful individualists also a fully-fledged functional replacement for the originals such as Shimano Dura Ace, Campagnolo Super Record or SRAM Red? We put 13 crank alternatives from eleven manufacturers - nine made of carbon and four made of aluminium - through their paces. Total value of the test field: almost 10,000 euros.
