With UNITY Cold27, Gobik is expanding its range of clothing for the colder months. The collection centres on the Weezer long-sleeved jersey, the Vantage jacket and the Envy and Prime vests. The four items differ primarily in the level of warmth and weather protection they offer. Gobik specifies a recommended temperature range in degrees Celsius for each of the four models. The temperature ranges from 5 to 18 degrees Celsius. These figures are intended as a guide. Cyclists who sweat heavily on climbs or get chilled on long descents may need a different combination of clothing than when riding at a steady pace on flat terrain. Why is that? The interplay between moisture wicking, insulation and wind protection "It’s more important than the figure on the thermometer," explains TOUR’s buying guide to autumn and winter clothing.
The plain-coloured Weezer long-sleeved jersey is the insulating layer amongst the four items featured. The long-sleeved jersey uses a winter fabric that is 25 per cent heavier than the standard Pacer Solid range. The thicker inner fleece is designed to enhance insulation whilst maintaining moisture-wicking properties. The fabric is designed for cold days or moderate-intensity activities. The construction is designed to provide thermal comfort without restricting freedom of movement.
The Prime wind vest is the lightest model in the collection. Weighing just 71 g in size S, it fits easily into a jersey pocket. It is designed for temperatures between 10 and 18 degrees. The minimalist design is intended to provide protection from the wind on descents or early morning rides. Openings at the back allow access to the lower jersey pockets. The model is designed for quick use when additional wind protection is needed. This makes Prime a useful addition for changeable conditions, rather than a full-fledged alternative in the event of persistent cold wind or rain. How Jersey, wind vest and jacket TOUR has categorised these fundamental differences in a separate guide.
If you’re planning for wet conditions as well as wind, the Envy is the more feature-rich of the two new vests. The vest uses the Polartec Power Shield Pro membrane. The material is designed to keep out wind and water whilst ensuring breathability. The vest weighs 166 g in size S and is designed for temperatures between 7 and 15 degrees. Features include taped seams and a YKK Vislon AquaGuard zip. Water-repellent pockets and a neoprene back flap are part of the design. The aerodynamic fit is designed to mould to the body’s shape. Gobik’s professional teams are already using this model.
The Vantage jacket combines different materials. Polartec Windbloc protects the front, whilst the sleeves feature a three-layer membrane. This is designed to block the wind and repel water. On the back, the jacket features a brushed inner fabric for warmth and breathability. The jacket weighs 261 g in size S and is designed for temperatures ranging from 5 to 14 degrees. The Perfect Fit cut is designed to provide a close-fitting and comfortable fit. The jacket is suitable for changeable conditions and cooler temperatures. Anyone wishing to tailor their outfit to temperatures at the lower end of the manufacturer’s specifications will find further guidance in the TOUR Guide to cycling in temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees.
