The traditional - male - road cyclist would probably answer the question of how useful padded cycling shorts are with a shrug of the shoulders. This is because the classic solution for making long, padless winter shorts suitable for road cycling, for example, usually works like this: simply pull on a pair of short, padded cycling shorts underneath and you're done. This combination of summer and winter shorts has its charm: it is relatively inexpensive and the seat pad is already familiar. In the transitional seasons, however, it can quickly become too warm under such a thick double layer.
Thinner pants would be an advantage when temperatures are not yet below freezing. Another argument in favour of padded functional underwear, which is usually available as shorts - rarely as briefs - is that it is less bulky than classic cycling shorts. They are therefore particularly suitable for wearing under long trousers made of thick fabric. However, the soft, supple fabrics of the pants present manufacturers with a difficult task...
