The functional vest is always in season. When it's cool during the transition period, it serves as an additional layer of insulation between the skin and jersey and keeps the wearer warm. When the sun is blazing and sweat is pouring out of your pores, it transports the moisture to the next layer, where it can evaporate and create a pleasant cooling effect. As it is worn directly on the skin, it also improves comfort, for example as a thin pad under tight-fitting braces. Women appreciate the additional layer of clothing as privacy protection under a thin summer jersey. Most manufacturers use synthetic fibres made from polypropylene, polyester or polyamide for optimum climate management. These synthetic fibres have the property that they do not absorb the sweat released by the body like a sponge (hydrophilic), but pass it on to the next layer of fabric due to their water-repellent (hydrophobic) properties - with the aforementioned cooling effect as a pleasant consequence. In cool temperatures, body heat is trapped in the fine meshes as a warming layer of air. Merino wool has similar characteristics to synthetic fibres and is becoming increasingly fashionable as a natural fibre with odour-inhibiting properties.
We invited short-sleeved shirts from twelve suppliers for temperatures from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius to take part in the test. We tested all candidates in the laboratory and in practice for their wearing comfort, evaporation and drying rate as well as workmanship and quality.
