After each Tour de France stage, our test pilot swung himself into the saddle from his TV armchair and extensively tested the Tour de France Edition of the Oakley Encoder Strike during many after-work laps.

His verdict: The 31 gram glasses (good average value) sit snugly on a small to medium-sized nose. As the cut-out in the visor determines the size of the nose, the narrow edges of the visor would rest on and pinch a very wide nose bridge. One advantage of this design is the high level of wind and eye protection it provides. The temples are long and elasticated, have a small padded area behind the ears and always hold the goggles firmly in position. In our opinion, the temples should be a little wider, lie more flat and distribute their pressure over a larger area so that there are no pressure points when they are in direct contact with the skin.

We really liked the visor due to its optical quality and very good protective function. It reaches far around the head (head circumference 58 centimetres), which means that there are no annoying visor edges to disturb the side view in the blind spot. On fast descents, we hardly felt any wind pressure as the visor always shields the eye area very well without touching the eyebrows or cheekbones. Visually, the Encoder provided a high-contrast, undistorted view of the road or forest path in all weather conditions.

Strengths of the Oakley Encoder Strike

  • Protection from airstream
  • High-contrast and undistorted field of vision
  • High wearing comfort for medium-sized heads and noses
  • Slim goggle arms fit most helmets
  • Custom design possible

Weaknesses of the Oakley Encoder Strike

  • Pressure points for very large noses and heads
  • Visor is not interchangeable
