Shimano calls the newly developed lens technology for its cycling glasses "Ridescape". It comprises five different lens options for different riding conditions. The manufacturer claims that this technology allows just the right amount of light to pass through to improve visibility on sunny days on the road, in changing light conditions on single trails or during an evening gravel tour. The impression should be clearer, more intense and more vivid.
The new Technium eyewear models have a full frame. The ventilation openings integrated into the top and bottom of the lenses are designed to reduce fogging and guarantee clear vision. A reversible nose pad allows for customised adjustment; soft, rounded temples are designed to ensure that the glasses stay in place even on bumpy roads and do not cause any pressure points.
The Technium goggles are available with three different Ridescape lens options: RD for road cycling, OR for mountain biking and GR for gravel riding. Each pair of glasses comes with an additional clear interchangeable lens for low light conditions. Shimano points out that 45 per cent of the frame is made from bio-based materials, which should help to reduce CO2 emissions during production.
The Technium L model is designed with a half frame and is therefore even lighter. It weighs 26 grams and the wide, one-piece lens combines protection and comfort with a casual look. The model is available with the same three Ridescape lenses as the full-frame model (RD, OR or GR); there is also a version with a self-tinting (photochromatic) grey lens. This automatically changes its light transmission when exposed to UV light and does not need to be replaced in changing light conditions. When the surroundings are dark, the lens is almost clear; when it is bright, the lens takes on a darker colour.
Finally, Shimano describes the new Twinspark model as an affordable all-round goggle with a focus on road sports. According to the manufacturer, the half-frame glasses with the Ridescape lens for high contrast (HC) are designed to filter out bright light reflecting off the tarmac and make surface details more visible. Shimano states that, like the other Ridescape lenses, the HC lens is scratch-resistant, water-repellent, clarity-enhancing thanks to the polyamide substrate, lightweight and free from plasticisers in the plastic. All three new models will be available from March 2024.
