The new Speedsense uses an airflow element for optimised air circulation that is designed to work from around 40 kilometres per hour on the bike. The Lens-Lock system enables quick filter changes, while LST Vario filters react automatically to changes in light. The frame is made from recycled material. The goggles will be available in different versions from January 2026.

One pair of glasses for many sports

With the Speedsense, Austrian eyewear manufacturer Silhouette is launching an eyewear model specially developed for triathletes. Sports glasses on the market. Triathlon places high demands on equipment: from swimming to cycling to running, speeds, body postures and lighting conditions are constantly changing. The Speedsense was developed to master these challenges and support athletes in all three disciplines.

The design takes into account the specific needs of triathletes who have to adopt different head positions during a competition. When cycling in an aerodynamic position, the line of vision differs considerably from the upright position when running. The Speedsense adapts to these changing requirements and guarantees optimum vision in every discipline. The development focussed on creating a pair of glasses that works both at high speeds on the bike and at more moderate speeds when running.

Airflow technology for variable speeds

At the heart of the Speedsense is an innovative ventilation system with an integrated airflow element. This technology directs the airflow specifically behind the filter and ensures optimised air circulation without unpleasant draughts on the eyes. The system works just as reliably at speeds of 40 km/h on the bike as it does at a running pace of four minutes per kilometre. The targeted airflow prevents the filters from misting up and reliably wicks away moisture, keeping vision clear even during intense exertion.

Switching between different speeds is one of the biggest challenges for triathlon goggles. During the bike course, high speeds create strong air currents that abruptly diminish during the transition to running. The Speedsense ventilation system automatically compensates for these differences and ensures constant conditions regardless of speed. The technology works without moving parts and requires no manual adjustment by the athlete.

Lens-Lock system for quick adjustments

The innovative Lens-Lock system enables tool-free filter changes in just a few simple steps. The mechanism holds the filter securely in place even under extreme loads, but can be released quickly if necessary. This function proves to be particularly advantageous in changing light conditions when athletes have to switch between different filter types. The system eliminates time losses and compromises in vision quality during the competition.

The design of the Lens-Lock system takes into account the mechanical stresses that occur during triathlon competitions. Vibrations caused by uneven tracks, sweat and changing temperatures can affect conventional fastening systems. The new system resists these influences and ensures a permanently secure hold. At the same time, operation remains so simple that filters can be changed easily even with sweaty hands.

Frameless construction with Traction Grip

The almost frameless design makes the Speedsense a lightweight that is comfortable to wear even over long distances. The design minimises weight without compromising structural integrity. The special Traction Grip structure on the temple ends ensures a non-slip grip, even when sweaty or wet. This surface treatment prevents the goggles from slipping during intensive use.

In addition to the weight advantage, the frameless design also offers an extended field of vision. Triathletes benefit from unrestricted peripheral vision, which is particularly important when cycling in a group. The design eliminates distracting frame elements in the field of vision and enables natural eye movements. The goggles are available in two sizes and adapt to different head shapes without causing pressure points.

Suitable for various disciplines

The Speedsense has three-way adjustable temples and two-way adjustable nose pads for customisation. This flexibility enables athletes to adapt the goggles precisely to the shape of their head and posture. In the aerodynamic position on the bike, the temples can be adjusted so that the optimum viewing point is maintained. For the upright running position, the position can be adjusted in a few simple steps.

The adjustment mechanisms are infinitely variable and enable precise settings. Athletes can adjust the goggles to their preferred position before the competition or make quick corrections during the transition zones. The settings remain stable even during intensive movements and do not require constant readjustment. The system takes into account the different requirements of the three triathlon disciplines and offers the optimum configuration for each.

LST filter technology for variable lighting conditions

The Speedsense uses LST filters from Evil Eye, which enhance contrasts and compensate for extreme fluctuations in brightness. The filters block 100% of UV radiation and protect the eyes from harmful influences. Particularly relevant for triathletes are the LST VARiO filters, which adapt automatically and quickly to changing light conditions. These photochromic lenses react to changes in brightness and adjust their tint accordingly.

Triathlon competitions often take place over several hours, during which the lighting conditions can change considerably. Morning starts in low light, bright midday sun or sudden clouds place different demands on eye protection. The Vario filters react automatically to these changes without the athlete having to intervene. The adjustment is quick enough to ensure optimum vision even in the event of rapid weather changes.

Sustainable ECO PPX material

The frame of the Speedsense is made from ECO PPX, a biocircular material made from organic waste. The production process uses tree bark and straw as raw materials and completely dispenses with fossil petroleum. Despite its sustainable production, the material offers maximum robustness, flexibility and durability. These properties are essential for triathlon equipment, as it has to withstand extreme loads.

The ECO PPX material underwent extensive testing to confirm its suitability for sports eyewear. The mechanical properties correspond to those of conventional plastics, while the environmental footprint is significantly better. For athletes who value sustainability, Speedsense offers an environmentally friendly alternative without compromising on performance. The durability of the material reduces the need for frequent replacement purchases and helps to conserve resources.

Market launch and availability

The Speedsense will be available from January 2026, as announced by Silhouette. The market launch will initially take place via specialised sports retailers and direct sales by the manufacturer. The model is primarily aimed at ambitious triathletes and multisport athletes who need professional equipment for their competitions. The SILMO d'Or award emphasises the technical quality and innovation of the glasses.

The price has not yet been announced, but is likely to be in the premium segment. The elaborate development and the materials used justify a corresponding positioning. Silhouette is also planning to present the Speedsense at international sports trade fairs and to incorporate feedback from professional athletes into further development. The glasses are intended to strengthen the Austrian manufacturer's portfolio in the field of sports optics and open up new target groups.
