Germany has poor eyesight. There is no other way to interpret the Allensbach study from 2014: 63.5 per cent of over 16-year-olds have poor eyesight. This means that around 43 million Germans need visual aids and should either wear glasses or contact lenses. However, another Allensbach study from 2011 states that only 5 per cent of spectacle wearers wear special sports glasses when doing outdoor sports. The overwhelming majority of 90 per cent hike, cycle or play outside with everyday glasses.
What may still be practical for hiking, touring cycling or playing badminton is generally not an option for racing cyclists. The clear lenses are usually too small and the frames too delicate to protect the eyes from the sun, draughts and insect attacks; the lenses are not designed for looking through them at an angle with a tilted head. Even from the corner of the eye, spectacle wearers usually cannot see through the cut lenses - quite apart from the fact that in the typical road bike position, either the frame crosses the field of vision or you look completely over the lenses. For many road cyclists, everyday glasses are probably too good to wear out during sport.
Short-sighted cyclists have the bigger problem; it is dangerous and extremely straining for the eyes to see in the distance. Far-sightedness is more annoying than dangerous if you can't recognise the numbers on the bike computer or the turn arrow on the GPS device.
You can find these topics as a PDF download in our buying guide for cycling glasses with ground lenses:
- Privacy screen: If you can tolerate contact lenses and have no difficulty inserting them into your eyes, you can solve the problem of defective vision comparatively cheaply and with little effort. Another option is sports glasses with optical clips in front. Trendy: Proper sports glasses with ground lenses.
- Tuning part cycling goggles: Sports optician - and active racing cyclist himself - Helmut Reinthaler from Aichach near Augsburg is particularly well placed to observe changing purchasing behaviour: His optician's shop is located directly opposite a cycling shop. More and more cyclists are now investing in cycling glasses with the right prescription - instead of perhaps in expensive bike parts.
- Moments of happiness: It is more favourable to glaze suitable cycling glasses with blanks from other suppliers.
SHORT & SHORT
Good vision is vital for cyclists. But not all visual aids are suitable for everyone. Not everyone can tolerate contact lenses, and those who sweat a lot struggle with burning eyes. Sports glasses with optical clips are inexpensive, but cause problems in the rain and with poor vision and look strange. Cycling goggles with ground lenses are expensive, but offer the best optical performance, are comfortable to wear, easy to clean and look good.
