The new Ares 2 is designed to solve this problem with a wider last that offers more room for the toes. The front is crescent-shaped from the inside to the outside instead of tapering to a point. Compared to the previous model, this should harmonise efficiency and comfort better. The new high-end shoe weighs 525 grams per pair in size 44 and costs 549 euros. It is available in many full and half sizes.
The most striking new feature of the S-Works Ares 2 is the significantly wider last in the forefoot area. This is intended to offer the toes more space in their natural position. This feature made a positive impression during initial fittings and test rides. The feeling of more space in the toe area remained even after several hours of riding. At the same time, according to test reports, the shoe conveys a flat feeling of pressure, for example when maximising power transfer when pedalling out of the saddle. The wider last therefore seems to master the balancing act between comfort and efficiency. Whether this actually results in advantages in terms of power transfer or fatigue on long distances remains to be seen in more detailed tests.
In addition to the new last, Specialized relies on proven technologies for the Ares 2. Two double-acting Boa twist fasteners are used for adjustment. These allow precise adjustment of the pressure over the entire foot area. A wide, well-padded tongue is designed to prevent pressure points, while the shoe, which is available in four colours, offers a firm hold in the heel area. The sole is made of carbon fibre and should ensure a high level of stiffness for efficient power transmission. However, our tester criticised the sparse and unhelpful markings for aligning the cleats on the sole. Clearer orientation aids would have been desirable here.
With a price of 549 euros (e.g. available here), the S-Works Ares 2 is clearly aimed at ambitious road cyclists and professionals. It therefore ranks in the top price category of road cycling shoes. Specialized promises a product that is based on extensive data and the latest findings on foot shape. The wide last should help to better combine the often contradictory requirements of a racing shoe - comfort and efficiency. Only extensive long-term tests and comparisons with the competition will be able to show whether the Ares 2 lives up to this claim and whether the high price is justified. However, for road cyclists looking for a high-end shoe with an innovative approach, the S-Works Ares 2 could be an interesting option.
