Specialised presents the S-Works Recon EVO, which combines technologies from the S-Works Recon and the Ares 2. The PowerHug closure system stabilises the heel and midfoot for better power transmission. The Body Geometry Natural Last is designed to reduce forefoot pressure. We have already ridden the new top model.

In the new Evo version, the Recon encloses my foot a little better than the standard model. This is very comfortable, especially on long rides over rough gravel tracks. The power transmission of the carbon sole is beyond reproach. The S-Works Recon Evo would be my first choice for a gravel race. The new shoe is aimed at riders who prioritise efficiency and stability during cross-country races and long gravel rides. The PowerHug closure system adopts the architecture of the Ares 2 and increases the contact surface between the foot and the upper material. The enlarged heel counter stabilises the rearfoot, while the structured closure system secures the midfoot.

Power transmission and lock

The PowerHug system works with an enlarged heel counter that keeps the rear foot in position. The design increases the contact surface between the foot and shoe, which should improve power transfer to the pedal. The BOA system can be adjusted in different zones and enables precise adaptation to different foot shapes.

Body geometry and ergonomics

The Body Geometry Natural Last forms the basis for the fit and is designed to reduce forefoot pressure by 44 per cent. Varus Wedge, longitudinal arch support and Metatarsal Button keep the foot in a position that aligns the foot, knee and hip. Adaptive adjustment zones are designed to prevent pressure points and increase comfort on long rides.

Off-road capability

Rubber and TPU cleats on the sole provide traction when pushing and carrying the bike. Interchangeable pontoons allow the pedal connection to be adapted to different cleats and riding styles. The BOA zones can be adjusted independently of each other, which enables targeted pressure distribution.

First impressions

Initial test rides have shown the Recon EVO to be a stiff shoe with direct power transmission. The PowerHug system keeps the foot in a stable position even under high loads. The Body Geometry technology is particularly noticeable on longer rides, where the reduced forefoot pressure is noticeable. The BOA adjustment allows precise adjustments during the ride without having to take your foot off the pedal. The cleats offer good grip on loose surfaces, while the pedalling remains secure on pushing sections and technical sections, but the shoe is less suitable for longer running sections.
