What is the best legwear for cold and wet days? Thick trousers? Thick and thin trousers on top of each other? Waterproof or just windproof? (TOUR 11/2006)

Progress is sometimes best recognised in retrospect: Cycling shorts used to be made of wool. They kept you warm, but unfortunately only as long as you were standing still. Even at a leisurely pace, it became bitterly cold because the wind whistled through the mesh and blew away all the warmth. So you had to tuck socks into your trousers to avoid freezing your most sensitive parts. But it also pulled at the knees, and when it got wet it was all over: the wool full of water, the legs freezing cold; what remained was the fight for survival.
