The SQlab SQ-Shorts One12 has already been around for a few seasons, which is particularly noticeable in the rather short cut and the wide but attached leg hems. Current trousers in this price segment are generally more elaborately constructed and do without the cross seam, which is usually noticeable on long rides due to its reduced stretch.
This is also the case with the SQ-Short One12 Women. Although the leg cuffs are by no means uncomfortable to wear, they are always noticeable, especially on the wide silicone band. Otherwise, the trousers with their somewhat smooth material wrap up female bikers neatly. The trouser box comfortably hugs the body up to the navel and does not cause any annoying creases when pedalling.
The straps set low on the buttocks hold the trousers and the extremely thin and tight padding neatly in place. Thanks to their seamless design, they sit comfortably tight without pinching. The criss-cross design is a matter of taste and can be positioned at the front or back. The special drop-tail function, on the other hand, should appeal to all female cyclists. This means that the SQlab can simply be slipped over the buttocks during a pee break - no more annoying jersey removal.
The Ergo experts have gone their own way with the seat pad. At just five millimetres thick, it is extremely thin and much firmer than the other pads in the test - with the exception of the Löffler W Bike Bibshort Concept SQLwhich also relies on an SQlab pad.
The special feature: while soft but thick pads quickly sag and often push inwards uncomfortably, this pad offers lasting support even on long journeys. Our experience is that occasional cyclists in particular do not get on well with this type of padding and quickly complain of pressure pain on the sit bones. However, well-established riders whose sit bones are used to the constant pressure can only benefit from this pad.
The ultra-thin, firm seat pad of the SQlab SQ-Shorts One12 Women is an excellent choice, especially for frequent cyclists. Seamless, low-set straps keep the padding neatly in place and offer a good pit stop function. The pleasantly taut, somewhat smooth material reaches above the navel and wraps the wearer comfortably. The short trouser legs with rather tight-fitting, attached cuffs are no longer quite up to date.
