Pee-friendly bib shorts are made for stress-free pit stops without the hassle of putting on and taking off a jersey or jacket. A few years ago, this type of trousers was exotic, but today there are a good dozen models to choose from. We tested ten of them, from Assos to Velocio, ranging in price from 130 euros to 260 euros, for the upcoming issue of TOUR 3-2024. We reveal in advance how the different systems work.

The manufacturers have come up with three variants for the exit. Gore and Bioracer use zips to separate bibs and shorts, Assos, Craft, Isadore and Rapha use clips, magnetic fasteners and hooks and eyes to separate the bibs, while the shorts from Endura, Pas Normal Studio, SQlab and Velocio can be easily pulled down and pulled up again in a few simple steps thanks to the cleverly placed elastic material on the waistband and bibs, without any fiddling with zips or hooks.

Straps with fastener

Braces with hook, clip and magnetic fastening: The braces can either be partially or completely detached from the trouser box. Most models use mechanical magnetic clips as fasteners or hooks plus one or more eyelets, which can be used to adjust the tension of the braces at the same time. However, rethreading the braces can be a test of patience due to the tension of the braces, especially at the back and when wearing gloves.

Simply pull down

Pull Down: The Pull Down version works completely without fiddling, where the straps and trouser box, which are positioned more to the side, are designed so flexibly that the trousers can be pulled down while the straps slide past the side of the body at the bottom. Compared to the other two systems, this works the fastest.

Here's how it works: slide both thumbs under the trouser fabric on the inside of the straps at the back and pull the trousers down - and the straps past the buttocks - while squatting down.

Separating with the zip

With this system, the zips run either vertically at the back or horizontally on both sides above the hips. With the vertical zip (Bioracer uses a cord as a gripping aid), the trousers are divided into two halves that open sideways, which works well for short pit stops. When separating the trouser box and braces with the horizontal zip, the trousers can be pulled down in one go. Both variants restrict the flexibility of the cycling shorts and can pinch and tweak in unfavourable cases.
