Featuring a Gore-Tex membrane, PrimaLoft insulation in the forefoot and a new twist lock, Northwave is launching the Celsius R Arctic GTX for the 2026/27 winter season. According to the manufacturer, the road cycling shoe costs 269.99 euros. It remains to be seen what the design can deliver, and this can only be assessed in testing.

Cold toes are often the first problem on long winter rides, particularly on descents and on wet roads. That’s why, with the new Celsius R Arctic GTX, Northwave has opted not only for a thick lining but also for a waterproof laminate. The brand’s previous winter shoes performed well in TOUR tests. Whether this model will do the same remains to be seen in a practical test.

Membrane and insulation: warmth without damp

The Gore-Tex Cirrus XT 4L membrane is designed to keep water and wind out whilst allowing moisture to escape from the shoe. Northwave describes the membrane as PFAS-free. The toe area also features PrimaLoft Gold Eco made from recycled material. The insulation is positioned where the wind chill is felt most keenly in cold weather.

An integrated neoprene gaiter finishes off the boot at the ankle. According to Northwave, it sits higher than on the brand’s other models. An insole made from fleece, EVA, aluminium and an additional layer of EVA provides extra protection against the cold from below. It is not clear from the manufacturer’s specifications how well the combination of waterproofing and moisture-wicking performs under varying conditions.

New clasp, interchangeable dial

With the Celsius R Arctic GTX, Northwave is introducing the SLW7 fastening system. Compared to the previous SLW3, the dial is said to be 14 per cent smaller and 16.6 per cent lighter. It allows for gradual adjustment of the tension and is designed to be operated even whilst wearing gloves. According to the manufacturer, if the dial is damaged, riders can replace it themselves.

When it comes to winter boots, it’s not just how they perform that matters: they must also fit comfortably even when worn with thicker socks. Whether the boots mould evenly to the foot over longer journeys therefore remains to be seen in the test.

Sole, weight and price

According to the technical specifications, the Morph sole is made up of 94 per cent nylon and six per cent carbon fibre. Northwave states a stiffness index of 10. This figure is the manufacturer’s own classification, not an independent measurement. Slotted holes extended by five millimetres offer greater flexibility when positioning the three-hole cleats.

The Celsius R Arctic GTX is available in sizes 36 to 46, with half sizes also available between 39.5 and 45.5. It comes in white and black/dark grey. The stated weight is 420 grams; the press release does not provide a reference size. According to Northwave, the price is 269.99 euros.
