Ten pairs of overshoes tested
In the transition period between winter and spring, the weather often changes from sunny and dry to cold and wet. Lightweight overshoes then offer flexible protection. In the test: ten pairs between 20 and 65 euros.

"Changeable" is the word in the weather forecast that makes cyclists hesitate at this time of year. Because it means nothing other than a constant change in the weather from sunny and warm to scary and wet - at worst every minute. And that in turn means that choosing the right equipment is more difficult. With this forecast, overshoes are one of the most important items you should take with you on a ride. After all, few things spoil the fun of cycling more than cold or even wet feet.

The range of overshoes extends from minimalist caps that only cover the toe area to flexible rubber boots with a zip or Velcro fastener. There are pure wind protection overshoes that only keep out the cool wind, but at the same time allow perspiration to evaporate - one of the most important aspects for dry and therefore warm feet. Then there are waterproof versions, usually made of neoprene-like materials, which also keep out showers or splashing water permanently. The disadvantage of the denser material, however, is that cyclists' feet are left to soak in their own juices over time. In addition, the completely waterproof overshoes are heavier and can no longer be easily stowed away in the jersey pocket when the weather improves on the road. We therefore asked the manufacturers to supply us with lightweight, wind- and water-repellent overshoes that are easy to carry in your jersey pocket - perfect for the transition period. The prices of the ten models we received ranged from 20 euros for the Toe Warmer from Mavic to the Windstopper overshoe from Shimano, which costs three times as much.
