What do I wear? Road cyclists actually ask themselves this question all year round. But while in summer you tend to give in to your fashion whim, in autumn and winter the priorities clearly shift towards function. The colder and wetter it gets, the better the clothing has to work - and chic design is of little help here.
The problem of individual sensitivity to cold and optimum body climate can be solved in different ways. If the sun is shining, there is no wind and it is dry, a long vest, long-sleeved jersey and wind waistcoat are enough for many cyclists to be well equipped for the training round, even at zero degrees. Things get more complicated in rain or sleet. An additional waterproof jacket will keep the rain out, but it won't let the sweat out either - and after a certain amount of time you'll be stewing in your own juices, cooling down even more and weakening yourself because your body has to expend more energy to stay warm. The ideal winter jersey must therefore be a real all-rounder.
SHORT & SHORT
When evaluating the 18 test candidates, it is worth taking a closer look at the individual scores. Not every jersey is suitable for bad weather, has the ideal road bike cut, is breathable and optimally equipped. Castelli, Gore and Pearl Izumi provide good all-rounders that should meet the requirements of most cyclists.
