Antifreeze: 18 pairs of winter gloves in the TOUR test
The ideal winter glove keeps you warm and dry - and fits like a second skin. We have tested 18 pairs of hand warmers and can tell you which models will keep you in control on the handlebars for a long time, even in freezing conditions.

Cold hands and fingers can spoil the most beautiful winter ride - and if they cling rigidly to the handlebars, it can quickly become really dangerous. Because then you can no longer steer precisely and pull hard on the brake levers. In order to provide an effective barrier against frost and moisture, the so-called layer principle has also proved its worth for winter gloves: A robust, abrasion-resistant and partially water-repellent synthetic fibre outer material serves as the outer skin. Underneath this is a water- and wind-repellent, partially waterproof barrier in the form of a membrane that allows perspiration to pass through to the outside as water vapour so that the glove remains dry on the inside. Underneath is an airy insulating material to protect against the cold. As a fourth layer, which lies directly on the skin, manufacturers usually use a soft, slightly roughened fibre. The art of the glove maker is to tailor this layer package perfectly around the complex shape of the hand: The glove must provide optimum protection without pinching and without restricting the hand's freedom of movement, so that you retain full control when changing gear and braking.

We asked the manufacturers to provide us with their gloves for winter training conditions. They should be lined and at least wind and water resistant. We have waived the waterproof requirement.
