Aldi is once again stocking affordable bike accessories on its shelves, including two bike locks for a small budget. The combination lock for 2.99 euros and the chain lock with key for 3.99 euros are clearly aimed at occasional cyclists who want to secure their bike for a short time. We have tested what the locks are good for in practice at mini prices.

The first conclusion

Aldi offers two extremely affordable bike locks that are primarily intended for short stops. The lightweight combination lock is easy to use and easy to transport. However, it offers little resistance to tools. The significantly heavier chain lock appears more robust and even has an LED key, but was also easy to pick in the test. Both models prevent spontaneous carry-on, but are no substitute for a real security lock.

The combination lock - 2,99 Euro

The flexible combination lock relies on a lightweight steel cable with a plastic protective cover and therefore offers uncomplicated handling for short stops. With a length of 180 cm, it can be used in a variety of ways and the mechanical reset function makes it easy to set the desired combination of numbers. Thanks to its compact design and low weight, it fits easily into any bag and is suitable for quickly securing a bike.

Two reversible keys are included, one of which has an integrated LED for better visibility in the dark. The cylinder is protected by a dust cap and the lock locks automatically.

What the locks from Aldi are good for

Three and four euros respectively - the two Aldi locks are hard to beat in terms of price - a cappuccino at the coffee roaster costs more. They are suitable for short breaks in the field of vision to protect the bike from quick access. However, if you're sitting in a café, it's better to keep an eye on your bike. Important to know: A certain security class is mandatory for bicycle theft insurance. Neither Aldi model fulfils this criterion, which is why there would be no reimbursement in the event of a claim. The locks therefore only offer basic protection for occasional stops.
